Strong Performance but Chairman Sells Shares: The Inside Story of a Global Beverage Giant

The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO) reported that global unit case volume rose 3% in the first quarter of 2026, while net revenues increased 12% year-over-year to $12.5 billion (approximately KRW 17 trillion). Organic revenues grew 10%, and operating income and earnings per share climbed 19% and 18%, respectively, underscoring robust profitability. The company reaffirmed its full-year guidance—assuming completion of the Coca-Cola Beverages Africa divestiture in the second half—calling for 4–5% organic revenue growth; 8–9% comparable EPS growth, excluding currency translation and acquisition/divestiture effects; and roughly $12.2 billion (about KRW 16 trillion) in free cash flow. It noted that potential outcomes from ongoing U.S. tax litigation have not yet been factored into its tax rate outlook. On May 7, Board Chair James Quincey sold 200,000 shares of common stock in the open market, raising about $15.8 million (around KRW 20 billion), while still retaining significant economic interest through his direct and indirect holdings.

Non-Alcoholic Beverages

In recent trading sessions, Coca-Cola’s share price has fluctuated just below its 52-week high as investors highlight the strong first-quarter performance, preparations for the African bottling divestiture, and growth in zero-sugar and premium product lines. The board also reaffirmed its commitment to shareholder returns by declaring the regular quarterly dividend and appointing new officers to the executive team.

As a leading consumer staples company, Coca-Cola sells carbonated soft drinks, zero- and low-calorie beverages, sports drinks, juices, and coffee in over 200 countries. It has built substantial cash-flow generation on a foundation of relatively stable demand through economic cycles. Recently, expanding its zero-sugar and premium portfolios and realigning its geographic product mix have emerged as core strategic priorities.
