Global Pharmaceutical Companies Expanding Immunology Pipeline with a $15 Billion Bold Bet

AbbVie Inc. (NASDAQ: ABBV) has agreed to acquire Apogee Therapeutics, a developer of immunology drugs including treatments for atopic dermatitis, in an all-cash deal valued at approximately $10.9 billion.

Biopharmaceuticals

Under the agreement, Apogee’s immunology biologics pipeline—including the late-stage atopic dermatitis candidate zumilokibart and the dual-target immunology candidate APG273—will be folded into AbbVie’s existing immunology franchise.

The transaction will be funded with debt and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026. AbbVie anticipates a modest short-term dilution to adjusted EPS in 2026–2027, with contributions to earnings beginning in 2032.

Recently, AbbVie has released multiple clinical data sets in oncology and immunology, presenting new blood-cancer findings at the European Hematology Association 2026 and long-term inflammatory bowel disease data at a gastroenterology conference.

The company also announced plans to build a new $1.4 billion pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in North Carolina, along with additional production-capacity investments, accelerating expansion of its manufacturing infrastructure.

Headquartered in Illinois, AbbVie is a global biopharmaceutical leader whose growth has been driven by autoimmune blockbuster Humira and follow-on immunology treatments Skyrizi and Rinvoq, with core businesses in immunology, oncology, neuroscience and aesthetic medicine.

Since Humira’s patent expiry, AbbVie has been strengthening its immunology and oncology pipelines to offset slowing growth. The Apogee acquisition is viewed as an aggressive pipeline enhancement aimed at long-term growth and product diversification.
